BofA: Starlink Mobile Could Dent Apple’s iPhone Subsidies

Bank of America has told clients that SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile service could disrupt the US carrier subsidies that underpin iPhone sales, while judging the near-term hit to Apple’s earnings to be limited. The service could challenge Apple’s iPhone sales model “although the near-term earnings impact appears limited,” Investing.com quoted the bank’s 12 October note as concluding. That note, from a team led by analyst Wamsi Mohan, was summarised on 16 October by Investing.com and carried by Yahoo Finance.

Mohan’s team examined how SpaceX’s push into mobile connectivity could affect Apple’s pricing power and its sales of premium smartphones. Apple is the US maker of the iPhone; SpaceX is the American launch company that operates the Starlink satellite internet network.

Key facts

  • About 53 million iPhones are sold each year through America’s three largest carriers, with average promotional credits of around $800 per device, the note said.
  • A 10% migration of those carriers’ subscribers to Starlink Mobile would cost Apple roughly five million iPhone sales and $6 billion in revenue, Mohan’s team estimated.
  • SpaceX recently agreed to acquire the nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio of Grain Management, an investment firm, complementing roughly $17 billion in spectrum purchases from the satellite TV and wireless company EchoStar.
  • SpaceX has also secured regulatory approval for a 15,000-satellite constellation and permission to offer mobile services without a terrestrial carrier partner.

Why it matters

The promotional credits are not simply discounts. The analysts argued that the subsidies sustain demand for premium models and push customers to upgrade regularly — a structural support for Apple’s most expensive handsets rather than a seasonal marketing cost.

That is why the central concern is Apple’s valuation rather than the lost units: the question put to clients is whether thinner subsidies would weaken US iPhone pricing power and premium-device demand.

The three risks Bank of America flags

The note sets out three potential risks to Apple from SpaceX’s move into mobile: disruption to carrier subsidies, competition from a hypothetical SpaceX smartphone, and the bundling of Tesla, SpaceX and Grok AI services.

Only the first carries numbers. On the second, the research does not claim a SpaceX handset exists or is in development; it appears as a scenario, with no product, specification or launch window attached. The third is thinner still — Investing.com’s account lists the bundle as a risk without the mechanics: no pricing, no structure, no indication of how or when such a package would be sold. Both read as flagged possibilities rather than modelled outcomes.

What could cushion Apple

Investing.com’s summary credits the bank with two offsets, neither of them quantified: Apple could expand direct sales through its own stores and financing programmes, cutting its reliance on carrier channels, and lower wireless bills could leave consumers with more to spend on hardware and services. No revenue or unit figures were attached to either in the published summary.

Spectrum, satellites and the timeline

In the bank’s telling, the spectrum and licensing moves are what make the thesis credible. The Grain Management deal and the EchoStar purchases give SpaceX a nationwide spectrum position, and approval to sell mobile service without a terrestrial carrier partner would free it from sitting behind an existing operator’s brand.

Those purchases add to other calls on Starlink’s cash reported this month, and the build-out is not instant: significant competitive effects are unlikely before fiscal 2028, Investing.com wrote, given SpaceX’s infrastructure rollout and pending regulatory approvals.

Who else has put numbers on it

Bank of America is not the only party sizing up a standalone Starlink mobile network. T-Mobile’s chief financial officer has publicly argued that matching a terrestrial network’s capacity would take on the order of a billion femtocells, as Starlink News reported earlier this week — a far more sceptical read on the engineering lift than the subsidy question implies.

Beyond that, independent reaction is scarce. The summary carries no comment from Apple, from any of the three carriers, or from a competing analyst; Starlink News has not seen the full note; and no share-price move was attributed to the research.

What it means for Starlink Mobile prices and availability

Every figure in the research is American: the three largest US carriers, US iPhone pricing power, US spectrum and licensing. It also sets no consumer tariffs. The $800 figure is what carriers hand out in handset credits, not what a Starlink Mobile subscriber would pay for airtime, and no retail pricing for the service appears in the summary.

For where the service is actually reaching customers, Starlink News has covered Starlink Mobile’s first move beyond its home market, to Japan — the kind of commercial rollout where availability and price detail surfaces first. The bank’s note addresses none of that for Zimbabwe or elsewhere in Africa, offering no subscriber numbers, device economics or regulatory timelines outside the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions

Would switching to Starlink Mobile mean giving up an iPhone?

No. Bank of America noted that Starlink Mobile works with existing smartphones, so customers who change networks could keep using iPhones rather than buying a competing device, Investing.com reported.

Could US carriers respond by increasing their handset promotions?

Bank of America said existing carriers could initially step up promotions to retain subscribers, which would keep supporting iPhone upgrades.

What rating does Bank of America have on Apple after the note?

The bank kept its Buy rating with a $370 price target, Investing.com said, citing opportunities in AI-powered devices and continued shareholder returns.

Is Starlink Mobile the same product as Starlink’s satellite internet dishes?

No. The service the note analyses is a phone offering that works with handsets customers already own, not the dish-based home and business subscription. The bank’s unit and revenue estimates cover only the mobile side.
