Zimbabwe Puts Starlink in 100 Mobile Health Kiosks

Zimbabwe is deploying 100 mobile health kiosks nationwide to reach rural and underserved communities, starting with 10 three-wheeler units — one for each of the country’s 10 provinces. The plan was reported on 20 October 2026 by Kiosk Marketplace, citing a Herald Online report, and by Telecompaper, which names the programme OneHealth.

The detail that matters for satellite internet readers sits in the Kiosk Marketplace account: each unit is to run on solar power and use Starlink, the SpaceX satellite internet service, as its connection.

Key facts

  • 100 mobile health kiosks are planned nationwide, according to both reports.
  • The initial phase is 10 three-wheeler mobile kiosks, one per province (Kiosk Marketplace, Telecompaper).
  • Those first 10 kiosks are funded by the telecommunications provider NetOne, Kiosk Marketplace reports.
  • The units will use solar power and Starlink satellite connectivity, per Kiosk Marketplace.
  • Kiosks will be staffed by nurses providing medical screenings, consultations and basic healthcare services, the same report says.
  • Telecompaper reports the scheme is led by the department of health with NetOne and ZimSmart Villages, which supplies the digital health technology and operational framework.

Why it matters

Kiosk Marketplace says the units are aimed at residents who otherwise may have to travel long distances for treatment. The connectivity on board is intended to support digital healthcare services and remote consultations, according to the same report — the function that makes a satellite link, rather than a cellular one, the operative choice in places without fixed infrastructure.

Neither report states what Starlink service plan the units use, what it costs, or under what licensing arrangement the terminals operate in Zimbabwe.

The telehealth network behind the units

ZimSmart Villages, described by Telecompaper as the partner supplying the digital health technology and operational framework, is developing a telehealth network that connects patients with healthcare professionals, diagnostic services and medications, Kiosk Marketplace reports.

That makes the three-wheelers one node in a larger system rather than standalone clinics, on the two outlets’ accounts. Telecompaper describes OneHealth more broadly as a programme to bring digital medical treatment to underserved communities, and says the initial 10 units are intended to scale up to 100 nationwide.

Bicycles carrying Starlink kits

The programme is not limited to the motorised kiosks. Kiosk Marketplace reports that it also includes plans to equip village health workers with bicycles carrying Starlink connectivity equipment — pushing the satellite link to the last stretch of road, where a three-wheeler cannot go.

No numbers were given for how many bicycles are planned, nor a timetable for that part of the rollout.

Where the two accounts differ

The reports overlap on the hardware and the scale but diverge on framing. Telecompaper presents OneHealth as a government scheme led by the department of health, with NetOne and ZimSmart Villages as partners. Kiosk Marketplace, working from the Herald Online report, foregrounds NetOne as the funder of the first 10 kiosks and does not name the programme.

Only Kiosk Marketplace mentions the solar power, the Starlink connectivity, the nursing staff and the bicycle plan. Telecompaper’s item does not describe the units’ power or connectivity at all.

Starlink’s wider position

The Zimbabwe deployment lands while the service is expanding on several fronts. Starlink News has reported that SpaceX posted $5.2bn in third-quarter revenue, and that Starlink Mobile’s first year with VEON put the direct-to-phone product on 11 million handsets without a dish.

Access is not uniform, however. In India, Starlink says it is ready to launch but is still waiting on spectrum assignment and security clearance, as previously covered on this site. The contrast is the point for African readers: a service already being written into a national health programme in one market remains pre-launch in another.

What to watch

Three things are unresolved on the record. The reports do not say when the remaining 90 kiosks will be built or who pays for them beyond NetOne’s first 10. They do not give a start date for service in any province. And they do not say how the district-level phase described by Kiosk Marketplace will be financed.

Until the department of health, NetOne or ZimSmart Villages publishes its own figures, the 100-unit target, the provincial split and the Starlink-and-solar specification are the only committed details on the table, per the two 20 October reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if a kiosk patient needs more treatment than the mobile unit can provide?

According to Kiosk Marketplace, the mobile kiosks are expected to act as an initial point of care. The same report says patients will be connected on to clinicians and established healthcare facilities when additional treatment is necessary.

Do the two reports agree on who is running the programme?

They frame it differently. Telecompaper says the scheme is led by the department of health in partnership with NetOne and ZimSmart Villages, while Kiosk Marketplace, citing a Herald Online report, describes the first 10 kiosks as funded by NetOne without naming a lead agency.

Will the kiosks go beyond the provincial capitals?

Kiosk Marketplace reports that after the first 10 provincial units there are plans to expand the programme to the district level. Neither report gives a date for that expansion.

Does Starlink power the kiosks themselves?

No. Kiosk Marketplace reports that the three-wheeler units will use solar power for electricity and Starlink satellite connectivity for the data link that supports digital healthcare services and remote consultations.
