SpaceX has chosen Qualcomm Technologies to supply the hardware behind Starlink Mobile’s planned nationwide terrestrial 5G network in the United States, Qualcomm said in a statement issued from San Diego on 4 November 2026. The chip company said SpaceX, the operator of the Starlink satellite network, picked its Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure platforms for the cellular base stations, with a US nationwide rollout planned to begin in 2027.

What Starlink Mobile is

Starlink Mobile is SpaceX’s phone-service plan, and it has two halves. One is the satellites already in orbit. The other is a network of ordinary ground-based cell sites of the kind every mobile operator runs. Michael Nicolls, Senior Vice President of Starlink, said in the announcement that Starlink is building the first fully-integrated nationwide satellite and terrestrial network.

This agreement covers the ground half only: the base stations that would send and receive signals to handsets within range, not anything in space.

Key facts

  • Platforms: the Qualcomm Dragonwing QRU100 and QDU100, plus commercial-grade Layer 1 software, according to Qualcomm’s announcement.
  • Radios: Massive MIMO units with 64 transmit and 64 receive paths, which Qualcomm calls 64T64R and says improve coverage, capacity and spectral efficiency.
  • Design goal: better performance per watt across radio and distributed-unit processing, which Qualcomm says converts energy efficiency into improved network deployment economics at scale.

Why it matters

Qualcomm frames the deal as a move into the ground-based side of Starlink’s connectivity plans. Nicolls said the company wants to use Qualcomm’s expertise and platform to accelerate its timeline for developing an end-to-end base station architecture.

“We shouldn’t live in a time where phone calls are still dropping whether you’re at home or on-the-go,” Nicolls said in the Qualcomm statement.

According to Blockonomi, a crypto and markets news site, the arrangement gives Qualcomm a major infrastructure customer and strengthens its position in cellular networking technology, while Starlink gains access to integrated radio and baseband platforms for its terrestrial expansion.

What the two Dragonwing platforms do

Qualcomm says the QRU100 provides highly integrated processing for Massive MIMO radio units and supports the radio functions behind the 64T64R architecture. The QDU100, it says, handles high-performance, latency-sensitive Layer 1 processing; Blockonomi reports that this work is spread across distributed network units.

Blockonomi says the efficiency claims, if they hold, could help Starlink manage energy consumption as it expands base station deployment across multiple locations.

A multi-band network in waves

Qualcomm says the Dragonwing radio unit and distributed unit building blocks give Starlink a flexible foundation for a multi-band network deployed across several rollout waves, and that its open, evolvable architecture establishes a foundation for future connectivity and intelligence. Blockonomi reports that the flexible design will let Starlink adapt its infrastructure as network requirements change.

Durga Malladi, EVP and GM, Technology Planning, Edge Solutions, and Data Center at Qualcomm Technologies, said in the announcement that building a nationwide network demands high performance and power efficiency at every site, and that the two companies have an opportunity to lay the foundation for AI-native 6G in the years ahead.

Market and carrier reaction

Blockonomi reported that Qualcomm (QCOM) shares gained 1.36% to $166.67 after recovering from an early-morning decline, and linked the rise to the infrastructure agreement. Qualcomm’s own statement does not mention its share price, and Blockonomi is the only outlet Starlink News found putting a figure on the move, so it should be read as that site’s number rather than a confirmed close.

The reaction from established operators has been colder. Starlink News has reported that Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile have pushed back on Starlink Mobile — a reminder that the carriers whose market the ground network would enter are not neutral observers of it. Neither Qualcomm nor Blockonomi responds to those objections.

Background

The announcement is the latest piece of Starlink Mobile’s ground network to become public. Starlink News has previously reported that SpaceX is in talks with Boost Mobile to launch Starlink Mobile, and that the build-out has been tied to a reported plan for about 80,000 cell sites. Both sources for this story describe a United States network only, with no mention of availability, pricing or licensing in any other market, including Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa.

Qualcomm published the release through Business Wire; the primary version is available on businesswire.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many base stations are covered, and over what period?

Qualcomm’s announcement puts the scale at tens of thousands of sites, deployed under what it calls a multi-year agreement. It gives no firmer total, no per-year figure and no completion date, and Blockonomi adds none of those. The roughly 80,000-site plan reported elsewhere and covered by Starlink News appears in neither source.

Is this a 6G deal?

No. Qualcomm says the deployment itself is terrestrial 5G, and casts the collaboration as a commercial step toward its and SpaceX’s broader vision for AI-native 6G infrastructure. Neither company attaches a date, a spectrum band or a standards milestone to that 6G ambition, and Blockonomi reports that the current agreement is not a commercial 6G rollout.

Does the agreement say anything about spectrum, regulators or rival carriers?

No. Qualcomm’s statement is confined to base-station hardware and software and does not address spectrum licensing, regulatory approvals or competing operators; Blockonomi covers none of the three either. The silence matters, because a nationwide terrestrial network needs usable spectrum and faces objections from incumbent carriers.

Which Qualcomm company is the counterparty?

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., which the company says is a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated and operates substantially all of its engineering, research and development and products businesses. The share-price reaction reported by Blockonomi was in Qualcomm Incorporated stock, which trades as QCOM.
