Singapore Airlines (SIA), Singapore’s flag carrier, unveiled a next-generation version of its KrisWorld inflight entertainment system on 21 October 2026, according to The Aviation Hub. The same announcement confirmed that Starlink, SpaceX’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband service, will be rolled out progressively across the airline’s long-haul fleet from early 2027, ahead of a full cabin reveal the outlet says is scheduled for 7 November 2026.

Key facts

  • Starlink will be introduced progressively from early 2027 on SIA’s Airbus A380, A350-900 long-haul and A350-900ULR aircraft, per TravelBiz Monitor.
  • The Aviation Hub, citing AeroTime, puts the Starlink fleet at 53 aircraft and says the portion of the A350-900 fleet flying regional routes is excluded at this stage.
  • Starlink is also planned for SIA’s future Boeing 777-9 fleet, with no timeframe given, The Aviation Hub reports.
  • The new KrisWorld goes into 41 retrofitted A350-900 long-haul and A350-900ULR aircraft entering service progressively from 2027, plus the incoming 777-9s; The Aviation Hub, citing AeroTime, breaks the retrofit down as 34 A350-900s and seven A350-900ULRs.
  • The system carries more than 2,500 entertainment options spanning films, television and music, The Aviation Hub reports, citing AeroTime.
  • Hardware includes 4K touchscreens with OLED panels on selected aircraft and cabins, spatial audio, Bluetooth pairing for personal headphones, a redesigned interface and a wellness planner, per Economy Class & Beyond.
  • The cabin programme housing the retrofit is worth SG$1.1 billion (about US$860 million), The Aviation Hub reports, citing AeroTime.

Why it matters

SIA is the latest carrier to put a long-haul fleet on LEO satellite internet rather than the geostationary systems that have carried in-flight Wi-Fi for years; LEO satellites orbit far closer to the aircraft, which is what makes heavier use workable at cruise. TravelBiz Monitor says the connection is intended to support streaming, social media, gaming, work and keeping in touch during flights. SIA joins a crowded field: our earlier report counted more than 40 airlines now flying Starlink, our previous coverage found United crediting free Starlink with winning fliers from rivals, and there is our related report on Elon Musk calling the service a must-have for airlines. The Aviation Hub says Starlink “raises the bar for what passengers can expect in the air,” and flags whether the rollout holds to schedule as an open question.

What Starlink will cost in Economy

Customers in Suites, First Class and Business Class, plus PPS Club members and KrisFlyer members travelling in Premium Economy and Economy, will continue to get SIA’s unlimited complimentary Wi-Fi on Starlink-enabled aircraft, Economy Class & Beyond reports. Everyone outside those groups is the one unresolved commercial question: The Aviation Hub notes SIA has not said whether a paid tier will exist for passengers in other cabins without elite status, and none of the reporting on the announcement carries a price, a data allowance or a session length for non-elite access. SIA said details of connectivity plans for its remaining fleets will follow once confirmed, which points to the 7 November cabin reveal as the next chance for a figure.

The gap is notable because free-for-all-passengers has become the pitch elsewhere on Starlink’s airline roster, as the three reports linked above show — United has gone as far as tying passenger gains to not charging. SIA instead gates free access behind cabin class or loyalty membership, and no published source yet says what a passenger outside those groups would pay, or whether they can buy access at all.

What the new KrisWorld adds

Beyond the screens and audio, The Aviation Hub, citing AeroTime, describes a mini player that lets passengers browse content or flight details without pausing what they are watching. On the retrofitted A350-900s and the 777-9, First and Business Class passengers can save seat positions for dining, relaxing and sleeping and reapply them on later flights, per Economy Class & Beyond, with First Class also able to store lighting preferences. The system shows onward SIA connection gates and terminals, and includes a children’s interface.

Yeoh Phee Teik, SIA’s Senior Vice President Customer Experience, said customers had asked for more choice and flexibility in how they spend time on board, and for entertainment and connectivity that fit more naturally into the journey. That line, relayed by Economy Class & Beyond, is the only first-party comment in the available reporting; the same outlet notes SIA has not named the entertainment hardware vendor, and none of these reports carries a comment from SpaceX.

Screens, charging and the Economy gap

First Class gets 32-inch 4K touchscreens and Business Class up to 22 inches, Economy Class & Beyond reports. On the 777-9, Premium Economy screens go up to 16 inches and Economy up to 13 inches. MileLion says Business Class screens on the 777-9 will be marginally smaller at 20 inches and will not be OLED, unlike on the A350.

The sources diverge on the rear cabins. Economy Class & Beyond’s table says Premium Economy and Economy on selected aircraft will feature 4K OLED displays. MileLion points to the final line of the press release, which states the existing Premium Economy and Economy seats on these A350-900s will be “refreshed”, and concludes those cabins keep their current hardware: no 4K screens, no Bluetooth audio and no USB-C until the 777-9 arrives.

MileLion calls the missing USB-C the most frustrating omission, saying USB-A ports on older systems output several watts and will not power a laptop or most tablets, and that the Economy seat-to-outlet ratio is 3:2 while power banks are barred from onboard use. It argues that pairing high-speed Wi-Fi with older charging solves one problem and creates another.

Timelines to watch

MileLion expects the first retrofitted A350-900 long-haul aircraft in service in the first quarter of 2027, with the A350-900ULR timeline still uncertain because SIA is fitting a new First Class cabin to that variant. The 777-9 is running seven years behind schedule, the outlet says, with first deliveries still expected in 2027. The sources give no detail on Starlink availability, pricing or licensing in African markets in connection with this announcement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which streaming brands supply the 2,500 entertainment options?

The content library draws on Apple TV, the BBC, HBO Max and Paramount+, according to AeroTime as cited by The Aviation Hub.

What headphones will Singapore Airlines hand out on the upgraded cabins?

First Class passengers get Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth wireless headphones with active noise cancellation, Economy Class & Beyond reports. Business Class and Premium Economy passengers receive active noise-cancellation headphones, which MileLion describes as unbranded for Business Class, while Economy Class passengers are offered wired earphones.

Will my viewing progress carry over between flights?

Yes. Economy Class & Beyond reports that passengers who log in to KrisWorld with a KrisFlyer account get tailored recommendations, can resume programmes they started on an earlier flight and can save titles for later journeys. The Aviation Hub adds that flight information is personalised to the logged-in passenger.

How many Boeing 777-9s does Singapore Airlines expect, and are they flying yet?

MileLion puts the figure at 31 upcoming Boeing 777-9s and says two of Singapore Airlines’ aircraft have already begun test flights. The same report notes SIA is not the launch customer for the type, leaving its arrival date open.
