T-Mobile CFO: Starlink Mobile Needs 1 Billion Femtocells

T-Mobile’s finance chief has dismissed SpaceX’s push into the mobile phone market, telling an investor conference that the carrier does not rate Starlink Mobile as a serious wireless competitor and estimating that SpaceX would need around 1 billion femtocells — small ground stations — to match the coverage of an existing cellular network, according to Business Today.

Key facts

  • Peter Osvaldik, T-Mobile’s chief financial officer, said at Citi’s 2026 Global TMT Conference on Wednesday 16 September 2026 that T-Mobile does not consider Starlink Mobile a serious wireless competitor, Business Today reported.
  • Business Today puts Starlink’s direct-to-cell fleet at around 650 satellites and its broadband constellation at more than 10,000.
  • Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president, has said the company expects to compete for the customers of major telecom operators.
  • No Starlink Mobile price, tariff or commercial launch date has been published.

What T-Mobile’s finance chief argued

Osvaldik’s case rests on two points. The first is physical: satellite links face what Business Today reports he called “fundamental limitations” in urban areas, because Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites talk directly to handsets and buildings can block or obstruct those signals. The second is corporate: he criticised what he described as frequent changes to SpaceX’s strategy, arguing that a conventional telecom company would not be permitted to keep revising its plans for building a wireless network.

Business Today published the remarks in summary rather than in full, and that language of fundamental limits is one of only two phrasings it attributes closely to Osvaldik. No transcript or recording of the session has been published.

T-Mobile executives had already poured cold water on the plan, and the same scale argument runs through how rival US carriers are framing the wireless threat.

The femtocell question

Business Today reports that SpaceX is weighing a second approach alongside its satellites: deploying large numbers of femtocells, small cell stations built with Starlink equipment installed on buildings. Musk has described these as Starlink antennas on the roofs of homes and businesses, beaming connectivity directly to phones on the ground. T-Mobile’s objection is not to the concept but to the arithmetic of rolling it out at national scale — roughly 1 billion units, a count Osvaldik is reported to have called “difficult to imagine”, which is the second of the two phrases quoted directly to him.

SpaceX’s counter-case

SpaceX has not pitched the service as a replacement for national cellular networks. Business Today reports that Musk and Shotwell present it as a way to eliminate mobile dead zones and reach places where conventional towers are hard to deploy, with Shotwell going further and saying SpaceX expects to compete for the customers of major operators. Neither executive is quoted at length in that report, so the strongest language on SpaceX’s side is the outlet’s paraphrase rather than its own words — a gap readers should weigh against Osvaldik’s two quoted phrases.

A caveat on the scale numbers

Because the argument turns on scale, the satellite counts matter. Starlink’s satellite internet business dwarfs its direct-to-cell arm, but Starlink News has not independently verified Business Today’s figure of more than 10,000 broadband satellites: published tallies differ depending on whether they count spacecraft launched, spacecraft currently operational or spacecraft since deorbited, and several trackers give lower numbers for the active fleet. Treat the figure as one outlet’s estimate rather than a settled total.

Starlink Mobile price and availability

There is no Starlink Mobile price, tariff structure or commercial launch date on the record, and no consumer availability date either. On the regulatory side, Starlink News has examined whether Starlink Mobile still needs further US regulatory sign-off — a gate that would precede any availability.

One further report exists but cannot be used here: PCMag UK published “T-Mobile’s Parent Company Fires Back at SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile Challenge” on 13 October 2026, which indicates the parent company replied, but Starlink News can see only that headline. It is not a source for what was said, and this story does not assume the reply added anything to the September argument. We will update if SpaceX or T-Mobile publishes the underlying remarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Starlink Mobile available outside the United States?

Neither of the reports behind this story addresses availability or licensing outside the United States, so there is nothing yet on record about when direct-to-phone service might reach markets such as Zimbabwe.

Does the 1 billion femtocell estimate cover the United States or the whole world?

Business Today’s summary does not say. Osvaldik’s comparison was with the coverage of an existing cellular network, but the geographic scope of his figure is not specified in the report.

Has T-Mobile said how many cell sites its own network uses?

No figure for T-Mobile’s own cell site count appears in the reporting, so no like-for-like comparison with the femtocell estimate has been published by either outlet.
