United Airlines, the US carrier, said on 5 November 2026 that passengers can now log in to their own Spotify accounts on seatback screens aboard aircraft fitted with Starlink Wi-Fi, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX. United says it is the first airline to offer that login on the seatback, according to Drive Tesla Canada.
The feature is a custom, native app United built for its seatback displays, and it is powered by Starlink’s satellite Wi-Fi, which is being installed across the airline’s entire fleet, The Verge reports.
Key facts
- Passengers open Spotify on the seatback, scan a QR code with their phone and pair their account, United says via Drive Tesla Canada.
- Once linked, they can reach more than 100 million tracks plus podcasts, audiobooks and videos, browse their own playlists and recommendations, and resume where they left off.
- The login is set to reach half of United’s fleet by spring 2027.
- Starlink Wi-Fi is now available on more than 50% of United’s daily flights, with fleetwide installation expected to be complete by the end of 2027.
- Music can also be streamed on a passenger’s own mobile device rather than the screen, The Verge reports.
Why it matters
The Verge calls the move a major shift in legacy in-flight entertainment. Older systems were built on the assumption that flights had no internet, so movies and music had to be stored on the aircraft itself, the outlet says; with Starlink on board, passengers can stream live from the internet instead.
United’s own executives frame the connection, not the content deal, as the enabling part. “Without Starlink, we couldn’t generate that living-room-in-the-sky experience,” Grant Milstead, United’s vice-president for digital, told The Verge.
Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer, made a similar point in the airline’s announcement, saying that thanks to Starlink customers can watch and listen to their own Spotify content on the seatback screen, per Drive Tesla Canada.
How the seatback login works
Rather than typing credentials into an armrest keypad, passengers pair the screen to their phone with a QR code, Drive Tesla Canada reports. Spotify, the music and podcast streaming service, then surfaces the passenger’s own library, playlists and recommendations, including video podcasts, according to The Verge.
United announced a partnership with Spotify a little over a year ago to explore pre-loading some music onto seatback displays, The Verge says. Mark Muren, United’s managing director for product marketing, told the outlet the airline decided a more personalised experience was the logical next step. “It’s supreme, perfect personalization in that it’s that customer’s actual account, all of their material available there,” Muren said.
The earlier version, a curated Spotify seatback collection with more than 450 hours of content, launched in June 2025, Drive Tesla Canada reports.
Starlink installation progress at United
Starlink Wi-Fi now runs on more than half of United’s daily flights, and that is what allows the seatback streaming, according to Drive Tesla Canada, which says the airline expects fleetwide installation before the end of 2027. The same report describes United’s accelerated install timeline as now targeted for completion in just 18 months.
For passengers trying to work out whether a specific aircraft is already equipped, United has also rolled out a flight tracker that shows which United aircraft already have Starlink.
Why United says Starlink performs differently
The Verge reports that independent tests have confirmed Starlink’s Wi-Fi works better than most other providers because of the sheer number of satellites it has in low Earth orbit, which the outlet puts at over 11,000. That infrastructure allows much lower latency because the signal travels a shorter distance than to satellites in geostationary orbit, The Verge says.
Milstead told the outlet United chose Starlink for its reputation for robust connectivity without the dropped signals or coverage dead zones that have typically plagued in-flight Wi-Fi providers. He said the bandwidth, coverage and reliability have been strong enough that passengers stream across the seatback with no interruptions, sparing United some of the complex engineering it has needed in the past.
Note that The Verge’s article is internally inconsistent on orbits: it quotes Milstead describing Starlink’s network as geostationary satellites, while the outlet’s own explanation places the constellation in low Earth orbit.
The rest of the industry
United is not alone in fitting satellite Wi-Fi. The Verge lists American, Qatar, Emirates, Lufthansa, Air France and British Airways as also going with Starlink, while Delta Air Lines is partnering with Amazon’s LEO project and JetBlue is sticking with Fly-Fi, powered by satellite operator Viasat. Elsewhere, KLM, which plans free Starlink Wi-Fi on long-haul routes from 2027, and Air Tahiti Nui is fitting its entire fleet in 2027, show how fast the installs are spreading.
United’s own view is that the advantage is temporary. “Starlink being a differentiator for United is a moment in time,” Milstead told The Verge, adding that fast Wi-Fi is coming for every airline and that the mobile app, and later the seatback screen, will be where United tries to stand out once connectivity is simply expected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Spotify account stay logged in on the seatback after I land?
No. According to Drive Tesla Canada, accounts log out automatically at the end of the flight. The same report says passengers can also use their phone as a remote to control playback on the seatback screen while they fly.
How much did passengers use United’s earlier, pre-loaded Spotify content?
United says more than 2.3 million customers have used more than 1.9 million hours of Spotify content onboard since the curated collection launched, according to Drive Tesla Canada. That collection held more than 450 hours of material.
Does the Starlink connection work on polar routes?
United’s VP for digital, Grant Milstead, told The Verge that global connectivity was one reason the airline chose Starlink, including coverage over the poles on some transatlantic and transpacific flights. He said bandwidth, coverage and reliability have been strong enough for uninterrupted seatback streaming.
Will other streaming services appear on United seatbacks?
United says more apps are coming and that it is looking to partner with other third-party streaming services, The Verge reports. Mark Muren, United’s managing director for product marketing, said the Spotify deal will serve as a blueprint for future integrations.
