March 2025 – Starlink, the satellite internet service by SpaceX, has officially launched in Niger, making it the 18th African country to gain access to the high-speed broadband solution. This launch also marks Starlink’s second African market entry in 2025, following its rollout in Liberia earlier this year.
The expansion aligns with Starlink’s 2025 roadmap, which aims to secure regulatory approvals and begin operations in 18 additional African markets by the end of the year, as noted on the company’s global availability map.
Regulatory Approval and Market Entry
Starlink’s launch in Niger follows months of regulatory negotiations, which began in Q4 2024. The company has now secured a five-year operational license, granted by the Nigerien Electronic Communications Regulation and Mail Authority (ARCEP).
The agreement was signed between Starlink and Niger’s ruling military government, with the goal of enhancing internet access in a country where current internet penetration is just 32%, according to ARCEP data.
Government Welcomes Digital Boost
Niger’s Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Sidi Mohamed Raliou, praised Starlink’s entry into the market, stating:
“Niger will benefit from this cutting-edge, high-speed technology at a very low cost.”
The launch is seen as a major step toward broadband expansion and supporting the country’s digital transformation goals.
What This Means for Niger
With its ability to reach remote and underserved regions, Starlink is expected to bridge the digital divide in Niger. The satellite service delivers low-latency, high-speed internet, even in areas without traditional infrastructure—making it ideal for countries facing connectivity challenges.
