Rome, Italy – Talks between the Italian government and Elon Musk’s Starlink regarding the use of the satellite internet service for military and government communications have been put on hold, according to Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.
In an interview with La Repubblica on Saturday, Crosetto said the conversation had shifted away from the technical value of Starlink and become more focused on controversy surrounding Musk himself.
“It appears to me everything has paused, also because the discussion has gone from Starlink to statements from and about the person,” Crosetto explained.
“We’re not talking about the technical details. When the controversy quiets down, there will be a technical approach. The main point remains: what is most useful and secure for the nation.”
Security First in Shifting Geopolitical Climate
Italy had previously been in talks over a potential $1.6 billion deal to adopt Starlink for secure satellite communications, especially in sensitive government and defense operations. However, shifting global politics and concerns raised by the current U.S. administration have led to increased caution.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has advised ministers to explore alternative solutions, citing the evolving geopolitical landscape.
Exploring Alternatives
One such alternative may be Eutelsat Communications SA, a European satellite firm with existing capabilities in secure data transmission. Sources close to the matter say Eutelsat is among the providers being considered for government satellite communications.
