What the order page returned when we checked five addresses

Because Starlink prices and allocates capacity by satellite cell rather than nationally, one price check is not evidence. On 19 September 2026 we entered five sample service addresses across four states and territories at the Starlink Australian storefront and recorded exactly what checkout returned.

All five returned the same $139 standard rate with no waitlist and no promotional or capacity-discounted pricing in this round. That is a snapshot, not a rule: Starlink has previously offered reduced monthly rates or discounted hardware in low-congestion cells while leaving busy coastal cells at full price, and it periodically runs hardware promotions tied to a minimum service term. This is precisely why we re-run the check across multiple states each month rather than quoting a single national figure — and why you should enter your exact address rather than the nearest town. Two properties 30 km apart can legitimately sit in different cells and see different rates, and the checkout price is the binding one.

Is there GST on Starlink?

Yes. Starlink charges Australian GST and the advertised monthly and hardware figures already include it. Farms, contractors and remote businesses should pull the tax invoice from the account dashboard each month rather than reconstructing the amount, because shipping, hardware and service lines are itemised separately and only the itemised invoice will support an input tax credit claim. Thresholds for writing off the hardware change between financial years — check the position on the ATO website or with a registered tax agent before assuming last year’s treatment still applies.

What separates Standard from Priority?

Standard is a consumer product: one service address, unlimited standard data, and a place at the back of the queue when a satellite cell is busy. Priority buys a prioritised data allocation — useful when a mine camp, agronomy office or remote clinic cannot tolerate a 7pm slowdown — plus business terms and the option of a static or publicly routable IP address for VPNs, remote cameras and on-site servers. In practice a single household almost never needs Priority. A property running SCADA telemetry, a point-of-sale system and twelve staff phones often does, and the $35 monthly difference is trivial against a day of lost trading.

ACMA Licensing and Regulatory Status: What Our Register Searches Returned

Starlink is legal to use in Australia and has been since commercial launch. The service operates under apparatus licensing administered by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), with an Australian-registered company as the local supplying entity. Rather than asserting that from memory, we ran the three relevant register searches on the review date and report what came back — along with the exact searches so you can reproduce them in under ten minutes.

Results of our checks, 19 September 2026

  • Company existence — confirmed. Searching “Starlink” and “SpaceX” on ASIC’s Registry Search returns an active Australian proprietary company operating as the local Starlink entity, registered under the name Starlink Internet Services Pty Ltd at the time of our check. Read the ACN and the current status straight off the register record rather than from us: both the registered name field and the status can change, and the ACN is the identifier you would quote in any dispute.
  • Spectrum authorisation — confirmed. A licensee-name search on the ACMA Register of Radiocommunications Licences returns apparatus licence records associated with the Starlink gateway earth stations, with site records, licence types and coordination conditions attached. User terminals operate in Ku-band, gateway links in Ka-band, subject to conditions that protect incumbent satellite and terrestrial services.
  • Ombudsman access — confirmed on the date, but check it again. The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman provider search returned the Starlink Australian entity as a scheme member when we checked, meaning external complaint escalation was available. Membership lists change; if a silent ticket queue would be intolerable for your clinic or business, re-run that search yourself before ordering.
  • Carrier licence status — we do not assert a conclusion. ACMA publishes who holds a carrier licence and what triggers the requirement on its carrier licences pages. That classification can shift with corporate structure, and a wrong answer here has real consequences for buyers, so we point you at the authoritative list rather than freezing a claim in a page you might read months from now.

Two different licences — and why they get conflated

Coverage of Starlink’s Australian status frequently muddles two separate instruments. Apparatus licences are issued under the Radiocommunications Act 1992 and authorise radio transmission — this is what the dishes and gateways operate under. A carrier licence is a different instrument under the Telecommunications Act 1997, required where an entity owns a “network unit” used to supply carriage services to the public in Australia. Holding the first does not automatically mean holding the second, and some satellite operators supply services through arrangements that sit differently again. Three things hold regardless of that classification:

  • Australian Consumer Law applies either way. Starlink vs NBN: Speed and Reliability Comparison

Starlink is not really competing with the NBN in general — it is competing with the satellite internet tier of it. Where fibre or a healthy fixed-wireless tower exists, NBN wins on price and usually on speed. Where the only option is nbn’s Sky Muster geostationary service, Starlink wins decisively on latency and comfortably on throughput.

Why the latency gap is physics, not marketing

Latency on satellite internet is dominated by orbital altitude. A geostationary satellite sits about 35,786 km above the equator, so a single signal round trip covers roughly 143,000 km and cannot beat about 480 ms even at the speed of light; real Sky Muster round trips land above 600 ms once ground-segment processing is added. Starlink satellites orbit near 550 km, cutting the geometric component to a few milliseconds and the measured total to tens of milliseconds. That is why Sky Muster users describe video calls as “walkie-talkie” conversations while Starlink users treat them as unremarkable. No amount of retail plan engineering changes this — it is a distance problem, and only a lower orbit solves it.

Where NBN still wins

Sky Muster Plus leaves selected traffic — email, web browsing, some updates — unmetered, and its pricing suits low-usage households on a pension or a seasonal budget. NBN also has an accountable retail layer: a named retailer bound by industry codes, with a well-worn ombudsman path if things go wrong. Starlink trades some of that structure for raw performance and self-service support. For a homestead running remote schooling or telehealth, the performance is worth the trade. For a shed used four weekends a year, it usually is not.

Installation and Setup for Rural Properties

Every Australian installation is owner-managed: the kit arrives with dish, router, cabling and a basic ground stand, and no professional visit is required or offered. There is no certified Starlink installer network in Australia as of this review date. The steps below are ordered the way a careful install actually runs, and each maps to a failure mode documented in Starlink’s support material or raised repeatedly in Australian owner forums.

  • Run the obstruction check first, from the exact mounting point. The Starlink app uses your phone camera to sweep the sky and flag anything blocking the field of view.   • Earth and surge-protect. On a metal-roofed homestead in a lightning belt, a surge diverter on the power side and a properly bonded mount are cheap insurance. This is the one step where a licensed local antenna installer or electrician is usually money well spent — not because Starlink requires it, but because roof work, pole footings and earthing are safety and workmanship decisions.

The structural point behind the numbers: throughput varies with how many active users share your satellite cell, not with your distance from a town. A property 400 km from anywhere often outperforms a semi-rural block on a popular coastal fringe, because the outback cell is nearly empty and the coastal one is not.

How to run a test that actually means something

Speed claims are only useful with a method attached. A credible rural test: run from a device wired to the Starlink router, not over Wi-Fi at the far end of a homestead; repeat at midday, between 7pm and 9pm, and after midnight; record the date, postcode, hardware generation and whether other devices were active; and keep results in one file so you have evidence if you later raise a ticket. Because the link is satellite-based, Starlink does not depend on the terrestrial backhaul, copper and mobile towers that fail first in a fire, cyclone or flood.   • Seasonal or camp-based operations that can use monthly pausing to match billing to occupancy.
  • Businesses needing a static or publicly routable IP for VPN access to on-site systems (Priority tier).

Wait, or choose something else

  • Addresses with NBN fibre to the premises or node — you would pay more for less speed.
  • Blocks with a strong, evening-tested 5G fixed-wireless signal, usually cheaper and lower-latency again.
  • Low-usage households where Sky Muster Plus already covers browsing and email within budget.
  • Sites with unavoidable obstruction — dense canopy or a steep ridge to the north — where no mounting point clears the sky.
  • Anyone who needs a contractual fault-response commitment more than they need throughput.

Should you keep NBN as backup?

For anything safety-critical — a remote clinic, a station with an airstrip, a business taking card payments — a hybrid setup is the sensible configuration: Starlink as the primary link, a retained Sky Muster or mobile broadband service as failover, joined by a dual-WAN router that switches automatically. The second service typically costs around a third of the primary but removes a single point of failure and, running on different technology through a different provider, is unlikely to fail in the same event. Households can get most of that resilience with a mobile hotspot, a charged power bank and a one-page failover plan written down where everyone can find it.

Indigenous and community access

Satellite connectivity in remote communities is more often funded than bought retail.   • Address changes: update the service address when the dish moves permanently; capacity and pricing are tied to the cell your address sits in, not to the hardware.

Starlink has turned satellite internet in Australia from a compromise into an ordinary broadband experience for properties the fixed-line network will never reach.
