That figure is roughly two years old at the time of writing and we treat it as a historical high-water mark, not a 2026 reading. Those are illustrative, self-selected samples rather than measured medians — the actionable point is the shape of the curve, not the specific numbers. Test at 9pm, not 9am, before deciding whether a tier upgrade is worth $30 a month, and test on a weekday rather than a Sunday.

Is it enough for streaming and gaming?

A 4K Netflix stream needs about 15–25 Mbps, so even a degraded evening connection carries two or three simultaneously. Gaming is the sharper question: 30–60 ms latency is fine for most titles, but Starlink’s jitter — brief spikes when the terminal hands off between satellites — is what competitive FPS and fighting-game players notice. Turn-based, MMO and console co-op play are unaffected in practice. Self-installation takes 30–60 minutes for most US homes and needs no tools beyond what is required to route the cable. The kit ships with the Gen 3 dish, the Wi-Fi router, a 75-foot (22.9 m) cable, the power supply and a ground-level base.

  1. Install the Starlink app (iOS or Android) and run the augmented-reality obstruction check from each candidate mounting position. Compare results before committing to any one spot.
  2. Set the dish on the included base at ground level first and confirm a stable connection for 24 hours. Temporary placement costs nothing and prevents a permanent mount in the wrong place.
  3. Power up and let the dish self-orient. The Gen 3 unit aims itself; you do not set azimuth or elevation manually.
  4. Route the cable. Drill an appropriately sized hole through the rim joist or wall, fit a weatherproof bushing, seal with exterior-grade sealant, and leave a drip loop on the outside so water runs off rather than tracking into the hole.
