Banglalink, a mobile operator in Bangladesh, has launched a Starlink-powered satellite-to-mobile service, saying Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to introduce it. The launch was reported on 7 October 2026 by The Business Standard, citing a press release from the operator. Starlink News has found no SpaceX or Starlink statement confirming or describing the arrangement.

Key facts

  • Banglalink has launched a Starlink-powered satellite-to-mobile service, according to the operator’s press release as relayed by The Business Standard.
  • The operator claims Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to introduce the service.
  • Starlink internet is free with any internet or mixed bundle pack during the first month of launch, and continues at no additional cost with selected monthly internet and mixed bundle packs from the second month, the operator said.
  • Johan Buse, named as Banglalink’s CEO, fronted the announcement.
  • The press release is the only primary material cited in the report.

Why it matters

Satellite-to-mobile puts a satellite link behind an ordinary phone number, and Banglalink is selling it inside its regular mobile bundles rather than as a standalone satellite internet product.

The claim is regional rather than Asia-wide. On 2 October, Starlink News reported that Philippine operator Globe added Starlink satellite data to a Japan roaming promo, so attaching Starlink to an existing mobile pack is already happening elsewhere in Asia; Banglalink’s narrower assertion is to be first in South Asia.

On performance, the operator published no figures. The nearest independent yardstick is independent testing of Starlink’s direct-to-device service by Ookla, which measured Starlink ahead of rival AST SpaceMobile — a result drawn from other markets, not from Bangladesh. Where carrier deals are not the deciding factor, the gatekeeping sits elsewhere: Starlink News has reported that for new capacity in Africa, African regulators rather than telcos are the gatekeepers.

What Banglalink says the service is for

The operator said the network is expected to be particularly valuable for fishermen, people working at sea, travellers and communities in remote and coastal areas, according to The Business Standard’s account of the press release.

Banglalink framed the launch around resilience as much as reach, saying it provides connectivity beyond conventional mobile coverage during emergencies, natural disasters and prolonged power outages, and that the launch strengthens its position as a digital operator.

How the offer is being priced

Rather than publishing a standalone tariff, Banglalink is attaching the satellite internet service to packs customers already buy. Beyond the free first month and the continuation on selected packs, the press release quoted by The Business Standard does not say which packs qualify, what they cost, or how much satellite data is included, and gives no figure for how many customers the operator expects to use the service.

Starlink News has asked Banglalink for the qualifying pack list and pricing, and found no tariff detail in SpaceX or Starlink material. This story will be updated if the operator responds.

What the CEO said

Buse’s quoted remarks, as carried by The Business Standard, are framed around individual users rather than coverage maps: a family hearing from a loved one, a fisherman sending a message home, someone in a remote area knowing they can still reach help. That summary is our paraphrase of the report, not verbatim wording.

The one line the report reproduces word for word is the operator’s pitch: “If you can see the sky, Banglalink can help you stay connected.”

What the announcement does not cover

The press release does not name which Starlink satellites or spectrum arrangements carry the service, does not describe any regulatory approval process in Bangladesh, and does not say when the launch offer ends. It gives no data speeds and no coverage map, and says nothing about availability in other markets.

We will update this story if Banglalink, SpaceX or Starlink publishes further detail on coverage, qualifying packs or pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I need to use Banglalink’s satellite-to-mobile service?

According to The Business Standard, Banglalink says customers need a 4G phone and a Banglalink SIM. The operator did not describe any additional dish, antenna or satellite handset in the announcement.

What can customers actually do over the satellite connection?

Banglalink said customers can access essential apps and location services beyond the reach of conventional mobile networks, according to the report, and will also receive five free SMS messages each month to use over the satellite network. The report does not say whether voice calls are carried.

How far out to sea does Banglalink say the service reaches?

The operator said the network is expected to be particularly valuable in deep-sea locations within Bangladesh’s exclusive economic zone, The Business Standard reported. No specific distance in kilometres was given in the announcement.

Does the announcement mention availability in Africa or Zimbabwe?

No. The report covers Bangladesh only, and Banglalink’s claim is limited to being first in South Asia. Nothing in the source addresses African availability, pricing or licensing for satellite-to-mobile service.
