Starlink, the satellite internet arm of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has published a sign-up page recruiting people to host a shared connection that nearby users pay to access, with passes planned in four tiers — hourly, daily, weekly and monthly — and a share of the revenue going to the host. The page, titled “Starlink for Communities”, was spotted by US magazine PCMag on 1 October 2026 and reported a day later by German technology site heise online, which notes it is already available in a German translation. Neither outlet cites a statement from Starlink.

Key facts

  • Hosts share their Starlink connection with other people for a fee and receive a share of the revenue from each connection, heise online reports.
  • Starlink intends to take care of payments, user access and connectivity, according to the same report.
  • The application form says the community host programme will initially start as a beta, per heise online’s reading of the form.
  • What hosts actually earn from the revenue share is not stated, heise online says.
  • The two outlets label it differently: heise online uses “Starlink for Communities”, while PCMag’s headline calls it the “Community Site” programme.

What the sign-up page asks of hosts

In heise online’s account of the page, the entry requirement is minimal: hosts “simply need to order a Starlink kit” and set it up “at a location where there are several households or users nearby”. The offer is aimed at property owners, business owners and local entrepreneurs.

The form itself asks applicants for their technical knowledge, where they want to place the offer, how many locations they want to set up — and what price users would pay for a pass. Starlink has published no prices for the flexible tickets, so that figure is still being collected from applicants rather than set by the company.

Neither report gives a user limit per host site, nor any detail of the router hardware or network configuration a host would run.

Why it matters

heise online frames the page as Starlink pursuing unconventional ways to attract new customers: routing paying users through someone else’s dish instead of selling each of them a kit. The outlet compares the result to the Wi-Fi already offered in some shops, coworking spaces and hotels, with one difference — it is not free.

It also moves Starlink’s retail relationship one step away from the household. Readers used to sharing one dish across a whole building would, under this programme, buy a ticket from a host rather than a subscription from Starlink.

Time-based passes are not new for Starlink

Selling connectivity by the hour or the day is already familiar elsewhere in the service: Starlink-equipped ships have sold day passes sold on cruise ships to passengers. The difference here, as heise online describes it, is that the seller is an individual host rather than an operator, and the takings are split.

What is still unknown

Three numbers would turn the sign-up page into a product, and none exists yet in either report: the host payout percentage, the ticket prices, and the list of beta markets. heise online writes that it is unclear where and when the programme will launch, and whether it will come to Germany at all despite the translated page.

The same report adds one piece of context: Starlink recently increased the prices of its regular internet plans in Germany. heise online does not say the two moves are connected.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many devices can one Starlink community pass cover?

According to heise online, the hourly, daily and weekly tickets are each planned to allow usage on one device, while a monthly ticket is intended to cover up to four devices.

Who pays for the Starlink kit a host sets up?

heise online reports that hosts simply need to order a Starlink kit, apparently at their own expense. Neither that report nor PCMag’s mentions any equipment subsidy or hardware discount from Starlink for hosts.

Has Starlink itself commented on the programme?

No. Neither PCMag nor heise online cites a Starlink spokesperson or a company announcement; every detail in their reports comes from the sign-up page and the host application form.

Was there an earlier sign of a Starlink community programme?

Yes. heise online, citing PCMag, says there were already indications of such a community programme last year, so the sign-up page is not the first hint of the idea.
