American Airlines said on Thursday, October 8, that it will install SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet across its entire mainline fleet of more than 1,030 aircraft, expanding a plan it first announced in May that covered just over 500 Airbus jets. The Fort Worth, Texas carrier said installations are scheduled to begin in early 2027, according to VINnews, which cited American’s own newsroom announcement.

Key facts

  • The mainline fleet breaks down into more than 500 Airbus narrowbodies, more than 400 Boeing narrowbodies and more than 130 widebodies, per the airline’s published figures reported by Aviation A2Z. Grafa counts the same addition from the other direction, as more than 530 Boeing aircraft joining the programme.
  • Equipped aircraft will use SpaceX’s Performance Aero Terminal, an aircraft-mounted satellite antenna system American says can deliver up to 1 gigabit per second per terminal, VINnews reported.
  • Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, according to Grafa.

Why it matters

Going fleetwide is aimed at a consistent Wi-Fi experience across American’s global network rather than confining the newest hardware to one aircraft family, Aviation A2Z reported, which recasts the May order as the first stage of a broader connectivity strategy.

The reach is the headline number. American says more than 165 million customers fly on its mainline aircraft each year across four fleet families, and expects that to grow as it takes delivery of more than 300 new mainline aircraft in the coming years.

What American and SpaceX said

American’s Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said customers have told the airline that dependable connectivity can make a meaningful difference to how they spend their time in the air, shaping what they do onboard, from streamed entertainment and gaming to working and shopping, Drive Tesla reported. That list of onboard uses is the airline’s own marketing claim for the service rather than independently measured performance.

Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX’s vice president of Starlink business operations, framed the pitch around continuity: “Customers will have fast, reliable internet from gate to gate,” she said in remarks reported by VINnews.

How the plan grew

American first said in May 2026 that Starlink would go onto more than 500 Airbus aircraft, with installations starting in the first quarter of 2027. The October announcement adds the rest of the mainline fleet, including the Boeing 737 narrowbodies and the Boeing 777 and 787 widebodies.

The move had been flagged in advance. Aviation A2Z said OMAAT reported on October 2 that American could extend Starlink beyond Airbus, citing an October 1 report from JonNYC naming the 737, 777 and 787 as possible additions. That remained unconfirmed until American’s announcement.

Delta, United and the satellite split

With American’s expanded commitment, Starlink now has deals with three of the four largest US airlines, leaving Delta Air Lines as the only holdout, Drive Tesla reported.

Delta announced in March 2026 that it would introduce Amazon Leo, the satellite network formerly called Project Kuiper, on hundreds of aircraft, beginning with 500 in 2028. Aviation A2Z stressed that this does not mean Delta lacks good Wi-Fi today: the carrier already offers complimentary Wi-Fi across much of its fleet and is investing in its Delta Sync platform and seatback experience. What differs is the next-generation satellite system each carrier has picked, and the scale and timing of the installations.

United Airlines offers a benchmark on pace. United reported in its second-quarter 2026 results that Starlink was installed on 450 mainline and United Express aircraft, and that it remained on track to cover its whole fleet by the end of 2027, per Aviation A2Z. United’s programme is broader in one respect, because it spans regional flying as well as mainline. In Europe, Lufthansa has begun switching on Starlink Wi-Fi, with 850 aircraft due by 2029.

Airline Satellite provider Aircraft Target completion
American Airlines Starlink 1,030+ mainline Installs begin early 2027; no end date announced
United Airlines Starlink 450 fitted as of Q2 2026; mainline plus United Express Entire fleet by end of 2027
Delta Air Lines Amazon Leo (ex-Project Kuiper) Hundreds, starting with 500 Rollout starts 2028
Lufthansa Starlink 850 2029

A widening list of airline deals

Drive Tesla reported that SpaceX has already signed in-flight agreements with United, Southwest Airlines, WestJet of Canada, Lufthansa, Air France and, the day before American’s announcement, Dutch carrier KLM. Smaller programmes are stacking up too, including Royal Air Maroc’s 41-aircraft order and, in Asia, Vietjet’s deal covering 120 aircraft.

What has not been announced

American has not given a completion date for fitting all 1,030-plus mainline aircraft, published an aircraft-by-aircraft schedule, or said anything about pricing or whether the Wi-Fi will be free to all passengers, Aviation A2Z reported. The outlet said a programme this size will likely take a multiyear installation effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will every passenger get 1 Gbps on a Starlink-equipped American flight?

No. Aviation A2Z said the 1 Gbps figure is the Performance Aero Terminal’s stated capacity, not a per-passenger speed, and that real performance depends on aircraft configuration, network capacity and passenger demand. The outlet said the practical gain for travellers is responsiveness as much as peak speed.

Which Airbus aircraft were in American’s original May 2026 Starlink order?

According to Aviation A2Z, the May plan covered American’s Airbus A320 family: the A319, A320, A321, A321neo and A321XLR, including incoming A321neo and A321XLR deliveries. The airline’s announcement at the time put the initial order at more than 500 Airbus aircraft.

Does the Starlink plan include American Eagle regional flights?

Aviation A2Z reported that the October announcement applies to American’s mainline fleet and does not announce Starlink for American Eagle regional aircraft. The outlet said that gap matters because regional flying is a significant part of a large network carrier’s operation.

Did American consider an alternative to Starlink?

Yes. Drive Tesla reported that before selecting Starlink, American had been looking into Amazon Leo, formerly known as Project Kuiper, as part of a wider effort to modernise its in-flight entertainment and connectivity offerings.
