SpaceX, the US launch company that owns and operates the Starlink satellite internet network, put 27 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit on a Falcon 9 flown from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Liftoff came at 8:28 p.m. EDT on October 12, or 0028 GMT on October 13, ending what International Business Times Singapore describes as a reported 23-day gap in Falcon 9 launches for the network.

Key facts

  • Deployment came about 62 minutes after liftoff, confirmed in a SpaceX post on X quoted by IBTimes Singapore: “Deployment of 27 Starlink satellites confirmed.”
  • The report numbers the flight Falcon 9’s 112th launch of 2026 and its 82nd dedicated Starlink mission of the year.
  • First stage B1088 landed on the drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” in the Pacific Ocean about 8.5 minutes after liftoff, completing its 20th launch and recovery.
  • SpaceX flew seven Starlink missions on Falcon 9 between August 19 and September 6, per the same report — a contrast with the pause that followed.
  • Falcon 9 flew 165 times in 2025, IBTimes Singapore says, cautioning that year-on-year comparisons need consistent definitions of completed launches and dedicated Starlink flights.

Why it matters

What reaches paying customers is capacity in service, not launch statistics. Associated Press coverage of SpaceX’s September 28 Starship flight, published by Yahoo News and WPBF, described the roughly 11,000 older Starlink satellites in orbit as already providing internet service, joined one by one by the newer satellites released on that flight. On that measure, three weeks without a Falcon 9 Starlink flight is three weeks without new capacity being added by the route that supplies most of it — the lever behind coverage expansion and congestion relief in busy cells. None of the coverage reviewed for this report described any change to Starlink service quality, pricing or availability during the gap.

IBTimes Singapore frames the mission as further evidence that Falcon 9 is carrying the bulk of SpaceX’s 2026 launch work while Starship remains in development. The same report carries Musk’s statement that the planned Starlink V3 constellation could eventually comprise about 100,000 satellites, with Starship as the launch vehicle.

Where the constellation stands

IBTimes Singapore cites 12,988 Starlink satellites launched as of October 13, 2026, with 11,131 still in orbit and 11,117 operational, stressing that the three totals measure different things — cumulative launches, satellites remaining in orbit and satellites still operating — and should not be read as a single figure. The AP’s independent count of roughly 11,000 satellites in orbit two weeks earlier is consistent with that in-orbit total.

Starship in the background

What happened on Flight 14

The pause matters chiefly because Starship is the vehicle meant to take over Starlink launches. Its September 28 mission — the 14th full-scale launch and the first to reach orbit — carried 26 V3 satellites from Starbase in southern Texas, according to CBC and the AP. The AP says one engine shut down prematurely shortly after liftoff and that SpaceX brought the vehicle down after about three hours rather than the planned 10 “out of an abundance of caution”; CBC, publishing the same day, said no reason had been provided.

What happens next

Depending on the findings, the AP reports, the next Starship could attempt a catch by the launch tower’s arms, with Musk putting the odds at even or slightly better and a reflight possible by year’s end or early next year. Until that cadence arrives, Falcon 9 batches like October 12’s carry the bulk of new Starlink capacity, per IBTimes Singapore.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does booster reuse mean for a mission like this one?

International Business Times Singapore explains that reuse lets SpaceX fly the same recovered first stage repeatedly rather than build new hardware for every mission, which the outlet ties to the company’s high Falcon 9 flight rate.

Has SpaceX given a reason for the 23-day pause in Starlink launches?

International Business Times Singapore describes the gap as reported but does not identify a cause for it, and cites no SpaceX statement explaining the pause.

Is SpaceX planning to retire Falcon 9?

The Associated Press reports that Musk plans to use Starship to haul satellites into orbit by the truckload and phase out Falcon 9 within several years. International Business Times Singapore says SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has discussed the possibility of Falcon 9 launch rates declining as Starship becomes operational, and that the timing of any transition remains uncertain.

Where will SpaceX launch Starship from in future?

The Associated Press reports that a second Starship launch site is nearing completion at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center and that a third is planned for Louisiana. Flights so far have gone from Starbase in southern Texas, according to CBC.
