SpaceX, the US launch company that owns the Starlink satellite internet network, put another 27 Starlink satellites into orbit from California in an early morning flight on October 27, 2026. A Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Pad 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base at 3:25 a.m. EDT (0725 GMT) carrying the batch listed as Starlink Group 15-16, according to Nagaland Post.

Key facts

  • Mission: Starlink Group 15-16, 27 satellites to low Earth orbit (Nagaland Post).
  • Launch site and time: Pad 4E, Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, at 3:25 a.m. EDT (0725 GMT) on October 27.
  • Booster: B1082, landing on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You in the Pacific Ocean at T+8:23.
  • Booster record: 21st Starlink mission and 26th flight overall.
  • Cadence: the 117th Falcon 9 launch of 2026, according to starlust.
  • Network size: more than 11,000 active Starlink spacecraft, both outlets report.

Why it matters

Nagaland Post ties a slowdown in the rate at which SpaceX delivers satellites to orbit in bulk to the company shifting focus to Starship, its larger rocket still under development, and says plans to retire Falcon 9 have already begun. The outlet gives no figure for how far that delivery rate has fallen.

The numbers the two outlets do supply show what the handover decides: Falcon 9 carried 27 satellites on this flight and has flown 117 times this year, while Starship has released 26 V3 Starlink satellites on a single flight and Musk’s stated aim is a launch rate of several times a day. Until Starship reaches that cadence, the pace at which Starlink adds orbital capacity for subscribers stays tied to a rocket SpaceX has started winding down, and neither report says how the company would cover any gap between the two vehicles.

That matters beyond Starlink itself, because rival constellations that still ride on SpaceX rockets depend on the same vehicle, as do operators planning sovereign alternatives.

How the flight unfolded

The two reports describe the same sequence. The first stage cut its engines and separated from the upper stage roughly 2.5 minutes after liftoff, then adjusted its trajectory for the droneship in the Pacific. Touchdown came 8 minutes and 23 seconds into the flight, seconds before the second stage finished its first engine burn.

The upper stage relit its engine about 53 minutes after liftoff for a burn that lasted just three seconds, circularising its orbit, Nagaland Post reports. The 27 satellites were released several minutes after that.

An earlier California flight

A Vandenberg Starlink flight earlier in October used a different booster, serial number B1088, on its 20th launch, Spaceflight Now reported at the time. That mission, Starlink 15-25, also flew from Space Launch Complex 4 East and also landed on Of Course I Still Love You.

Falcon 9’s wind-down

SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk has set out the reasoning for retiring the rocket on X, in comments quoted by starlust: “Once Starship is flying reliably several times per week, it makes sense to shift super scarce SpaceX engineering and production resources to Starship.” He said that would lift the launch rate to several times a day, which means winding down Falcon.

starlust says the retirement will take place once the next-generation Starship starts regular operational flights. Nagaland Post reports that part of the process already included ending Starlink launches from Florida earlier this year, leaving Vandenberg to carry the Falcon 9 Starlink load.

Starship preparations in Texas

SpaceX has been busy at its Texas facility, starlust reports, with Flight 15 set to be the fourth flight of Starship V3. Its first stage, Booster 22, fired all 33 Raptor engines in a full-duration static fire at 8:22 a.m. CDT on Sunday. The following day the 171-foot Ship 42, the upper stage for Flight 15, was rolled out to the Massey Outpost for a single-engine static fire at 9:17 p.m.

Musk has said both the booster and the ship will be caught at the end of Flight 15, which would be a first for the ship. “We’re going to try to catch the ship, which is a super big deal,” he said in an interview quoted by starlust, adding that success would mark the first full recovery of an orbital-class rocket. The report says Ship 43, the upper stage for Flight 16, was also moved to Pad 2 and lifted in what appeared to be another catch simulation, though SpaceX has not confirmed that purpose. Musk also said the next big milestone would be to refly both the booster and the ship, with Flight 16 seeing all parts of an orbital rocket reflown. Starship has already carried Starlink hardware: Starship reached orbit and deployed 26 V3 Starlink satellites on an earlier flight.

What the sources do not cover

None of the three reports gives the target orbit for Group 15-16, and none cites a statement from SpaceX itself about the mission; the company’s own mission listings are published on its launches page. The reports also do not address Starlink service availability, pricing or licensing in any country, so readers tracking Starlink costs or market entry in Africa will not find those details in this launch coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What orbit did the earlier Vandenberg Starlink mission target?

Spaceflight Now reported that the Starlink 15-25 mission flew a southerly trajectory along the California coast toward an orbit inclined 70 degrees to the Equator. It said the 27 Starlink V2 Mini Optimized satellites on that flight were to be deployed into a 266-kilometre-high orbit a little more than an hour after liftoff.

What non-Starlink missions has booster B1082 flown?

According to Nagaland Post, B1082’s non-Starlink flights include USSF-62, OneWeb Launch 20, NROL-145 and Transporter-18.

When is Starship’s Flight 15 expected?

Elon Musk said Flight 15 is about four to six weeks away and “probably launches a little bit before Thanksgiving, is my guess,” starlust reported.

Where is Starship’s Flight 16 expected to launch from?

starlust reported that, according to reports, Flight 16 would be the first Starship launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
