Musk Says Starlink Has 11,000 Satellites in Orbit

Elon Musk said Starlink had passed 11,000 satellites in orbit, in a post on X on 21 August 2026 that quote-posted a SpaceX update about a Falcon 9 carrying 29 Starlink satellites from Florida. The claim was reported by Yahoo Finance and, in identical syndicated form, by AOL, both crediting the 247wallst.com newsroom.

Key facts

  • Musk wrote that “Starlink now has 11k satellites in orbit”, according to both outlets.
  • Using the KeepTrack satellite catalogue as of July 2026, the report ranks OneWeb second among large low-earth-orbit (LEO) constellations on 654 satellites, with Amazon’s Kuiper unit third on 394.
  • Starlink accounts for more than half of all 19,447 tracked payloads in Earth orbit, and more than five times the rest of the top ten constellations combined, per KeepTrack’s framing quoted in the report.

The runner-up is OneWeb, not Amazon

The report’s central point is a correction: the widespread assumption that Amazon is Starlink’s nearest rival by fleet size is wrong, because Amazon’s satellite unit sits third, behind OneWeb, the LEO operator now part of Eutelsat’s group of networks.

It also declines to treat fleet size as the whole story, calling the count an input rather than an outcome and naming subscribers, capacity per satellite, service availability dates and ground infrastructure as the measures that will decide the race.

How solid is the 11,000 figure?

Thinner than a round number suggests. It is Musk’s own tally, published on his own platform, with no independent count attached, while the rival totals rest on a KeepTrack snapshot taken a month before publication. Yahoo Finance and AOL run word-for-word identical copy wrapped in promotional stock-pitch blocks, so they amount to one report rather than two confirmations.

Two independent trackers let readers test the claim themselves: the public KeepTrack catalogue the report itself leans on, and astronomer Jonathan McDowell’s Starlink statistics tables, which log launches, reentries and working satellites separately from any company announcement.

The figure is also stale by construction. At the two to three Starlink missions a week the report describes, and stacks of roughly 29 satellites like the launch Musk was quote-posting, the six weeks between that post and early October would add several hundred more spacecraft on the report’s own arithmetic. Treat 11,000 as a floor for late August, not a current count — and for a later snapshot of the gap between the two biggest constellations, see our report on Starlink’s lead over Amazon Leo.

Deorbits outnumber OneWeb’s entire fleet

One figure in the report shows the gap in operational experience. SpaceX has launched 12,444 Starlink satellites since May 2019 and roughly 1,660 have already reentered the atmosphere — meaning it has deorbited more satellites than OneWeb has ever put up. That is a measure of replacement tempo and disposal practice rather than of service quality, but no rival operator has run that cycle at anything like the same scale.

Where Amazon stands

Amazon’s LEO broadband network, branded Amazon Leo, has yet to begin commercial service. Chief executive Andy Jassy told investors on the company’s Q2 call that it has close to 400 satellites in orbit, enough to begin initial satellite internet service this year, and pointed to revenue commitments from enterprise and government customers plus more than 20 partners extending the network’s reach, the report says.

Approvals run far ahead of deployment: the first-generation system tops out at 3,236 satellites, and the US Federal Communications Commission cleared roughly 4,500 additional satellites in February 2026.

Commercial deals in the pipeline

Named wins listed in the report include Delta Air Lines and JetBlue, Australia’s National Broadband Network, Kazakhtelecom, and a Vodafone deal covering Europe and Africa. Delta’s in-flight service starts in 2028, the timeline the report singles out to watch and the clearest public test of whether Amazon can convert signed partners into working capacity.

What the revenue line shows

Starlink sits inside SpaceX’s Connectivity segment, which posted $4.29 billion of Q2 2026 revenue, up 66% year over year, with the user base doubling to 12 million. That quarter is also the source of the widely cited figures on 12 million subscribers and a $66 ARPU: the Q2 8-K exhibit shows average revenue per user falling from $85 to $66 as the base broadened.

What this does not say about availability or pricing

Neither source addresses Starlink availability, pricing or licensing in Zimbabwe or any other African market, and the $66 ARPU is a global blended average rather than a country price. The only Africa-specific item in the reporting is Amazon’s Vodafone agreement for European and African coverage, listed as a commercial win rather than a launched service. On the regulatory side of the next hardware generation, see our earlier coverage of why African regulators rather than incumbent telcos are now the decisive actors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 11,000 figure count only working satellites?

No. Musk’s post claims satellites in orbit, and neither the post nor the syndicated report that carried it distinguishes operational satellites from retired ones still awaiting reentry. The distinction matters because the in-orbit total and the in-service total drift apart as early-generation satellites age out — something independent trackers record and company announcements generally do not.

When could Amazon reach its approved satellite cap?

Not soon, on current form. The report says Amazon missed a July 2026 FCC milestone of roughly 1,600 satellites and asked to extend its deadline to 2028, and that the FCC lifted the looming deadline in June 2026.

What speeds does Amazon’s Leo Ultra terminal advertise?

The Leo Ultra terminal advertises 1 Gbps download and 400 Mbps upload, according to the report. No independent speed tests exist yet, because the network has no commercial users to measure.

Which part of Starlink’s business is growing fastest?

Enterprise and Government connectivity, which includes the Starshield defence line, grew 108% year over year in Q2 2026 according to the report — outpacing the wider Connectivity segment that houses consumer Starlink.
