SpaceX has cut the price of its Starlink Residential satellite internet service by 50% for people living in the Cameron County area of south Texas, the county that is home to the company’s headquarters at Starbase. The offer, called the Cameron County Area Discount, was announced on Monday, 5 October 2026, in a post from Starlink’s own account on X, according to reports from Drive Tesla and Tesla North.

Key facts

  • The discount is 50% off the standard monthly cost of a Starlink Residential plan, Drive Tesla reports.
  • It applies to both new and existing customers at eligible addresses in Cameron County, Texas.
  • New customers also pay no upfront hardware cost for a Residential Starlink kit, according to both outlets.
  • Existing subscribers do not need to apply: Drive Tesla says the discount appears automatically on the next bill for addresses inside the eligible zone shown on Starlink’s map.
  • Starlink linked the offer details from its announcement post (the link Starlink posted), which leads to the company’s own site at starlink.com. Neither outlet quotes the text of that offer page, and neither cites a separate SpaceX press release.

Why it matters

Tesla North describes the Cameron County deal as Starlink’s most aggressive residential price cut yet, and it is the third time this year that SpaceX has set satellite internet pricing by street address rather than by plan.

Pricing moves at Starlink have mostly been reported on the hardware side recently — the Starlink Mini kit was listed at $149 on the US storefront — while standard Starlink prices were reported as unchanged. This discount does not touch the published price list; it is tied to where the customer lives.

How the offer is framed

SpaceX presented the move as a gesture to the communities around its facilities. In the announcement quoted by both outlets, the company wrote: “Starbase, Texas is home to @SpaceX’s headquarters, and the Rio Grande Valley is where thousands of our team members and their families live.” Tesla North characterises the price cut as a thank you to the company’s neighbours.

The third local discount zone

Cameron County is at least the third area where SpaceX has offered this type of localised Starlink pricing, according to Drive Tesla.

The outlet says the Cameron County offer follows a nearly identical programme introduced last month in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, where SpaceX is developing its new Starbase Louisiana facility. As in Louisiana, eligible Cameron County customers get half off the standard monthly cost of Residential service. A discount for residents near the company’s Memphis, Tennessee operations came earlier, Drive Tesla says.

How eligibility is decided

Tesla North reports that eligibility comes down to whether a service address falls inside a qualifying zone in the Rio Grande Valley, and that the discount holds as long as the address stays inside that zone. Drive Tesla makes the same point, referring to the eligible zone shown on the map published with Starlink’s announcement. Neither report gives a list of qualifying towns or ZIP codes.

Part of a run of Starlink promotions

Tesla North places the Cameron County discount in a string of aggressive Starlink promos. Earlier this year, it reports, a secret $50 credit effectively gave customers a free month of service, and SpaceX brought free dish rentals to Canada for subscribers who wanted to test the hardware before buying it.

The same report notes that Starlink has been putting its service in unusual places lately, from turning an empty aircraft exit row into a five-game football lounge to Musk’s warning that Delta will lose customers over its Starlink snub.

What the reports do not cover

The central number is unanchored: neither outlet states the standard Residential monthly rate in Cameron County that the 50% is taken from, so the saving can only be read off Starlink’s own address-specific checkout. Both reports also rest on the same X post, with no quoted support-page wording to confirm the terms independently.

Both sources describe a US programme defined by street address: three named areas in Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee, each next to a SpaceX site. Neither mentions any equivalent address-based discount in Africa, Zimbabwe or any other market, and neither says how many households sit inside the Cameron County zone, how many have signed up, or what the programme costs SpaceX.

Where the two reports differ

The accounts are consistent on the substance. On timing, Drive Tesla says SpaceX announced the programme on Monday; Tesla North dates the announcement to 5 October, which was that Monday. Tesla North adds the notice and withdrawal terms, which Drive Tesla does not mention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can SpaceX end the Cameron County discount, and how much warning would customers get?

Tesla North reports that Starlink has not announced an end date, but says the company can stop offering the deal to new customers at any time. Anyone already receiving the lower price would get at least six months of notice before anything changes, according to the same report.

How many people signed up for SpaceX’s earlier local discounts?

Drive Tesla reports that an earlier 50% discount for residents living near SpaceX’s operations in Memphis, Tennessee attracted over 2,000 new customers. Neither outlet gives a comparable sign-up figure for Cameron County or for Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, the second area to get the offer.

What is the standard Residential price that the 50% comes off?

Neither Drive Tesla nor Tesla North quotes a dollar figure. Both describe the offer as half off the standard monthly cost of a Residential plan and point readers to Starlink’s own availability map and offer link for the rate attached to a specific service address. Separate reporting this month had Starlink’s published US prices unchanged, so the discount is a local deduction rather than a new list price.

Will SpaceX offer the same discount in other countries or regions?

Neither report says it will. Tesla North frames it as the open question now facing the programme, asking whether SpaceX rolls out similar neighbour discounts in other communities around its facilities and how long the Cameron County offer stays open to new signups.
